    Principal Function: The Historic Trades Specialist – Carpenter will be responsible for overseeing Conner Prairie’s woodworking needs, including oversight of both the modern and historic carpenter shops. This position will also work with the Manager of Historic Trades, and others as assigned, to perform repairs, maintenance, and reproduction of Conner Prairie’s buildings and structures, both modern and historic, utilizing tools, methods and materials appropriate to maintaining an authentic environment. This position will also be trained to work in blacksmithing.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Duties include, but are not limited to:

    • Maintains tools, materials and environments for both modern and historic woodworker shops.
    • Maintains and repairs both historic and modern structures on grounds.
    • Works to provide positive guest experience, while working on the historic grounds and in a support role through reproduction of historic objects, teaching workshops and interacting with volunteer staff.
    • Will be trained to perform blacksmithing interpretation on the grounds.
    • Provides carpentry and woodworking skills to other departments as needed.
    • Must be capable of general carpentry
    • Must be capable of determining appropriate materials and tools for all types of carpentry work.
    • .Must be able to determine timeframes, costs and all resources needed to complete a job    both historic and modern.
    • Must work as a team player.
    • Must be able to work cross departmentally.

    Education and/or Experience: High school degree or GED required.  General understanding of basic carpentry skills, both hand and power tool processes. Experience working with youth and adults in an informal learning environment.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly is exposed to working in wet or humid conditions (non-weather), and outdoor weather conditions. The employee will regularly work near moving mechanical parts, in high, precarious places, near fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold (non-weather), extreme heat (non-weather), risk of electrical shock, and work with explosives. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.

    Conner Prairie is generally open from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday, this position will be required to work beyond these hours and when open for special events.
